AGENT ORIENTED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (AOSE)

GUEST EDITORS:

Dr. Dhavachelvan Ponnurangam, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, India.

Dr. Baskaran Ramachandran, Anna University, Chennai, India.

The degree of complexity increasing nature of modern software systems lead the researchers to seek for better software engineering paradigms and we still have much to learn about the software engineering practices of different paradigms that can aid to improve the processes of specification, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE) paradigm is an important among the various software engineering paradigms which composes the cognitive mechanism with the software engineering practices. Though this paradigm holds its potential status in the field of software engineering, more vitally, we still have a fragmented and limited knowledge on how AOSE principles and techniques can improve the software engineering practices in the software development point of view. In this context, one of the primary motivations of this special issue is to reveal the versatile research directions and outcomes in AOSE software engineering. The objectives of this special issue are to bring out the remarkable current developments in AOSE and the enhanced practices of researchers and practitioners to promote, advertise and share the knowledge related to the agent technology in the software engineering community.

This special issue is dedicated to cover a broad range of titles with all of them presenting original and innovative ideas on the Agent-Oriented Software Engineering paradigm.

During the last four decades, reliable/dependable computing research has provided a number of quantitative methods used for real computer-based systems. Since the quantitative assessment and its related topics are the main issues in the above research area, one needs to develop several kinds of mathematical models and techniques. Based on the success of the Special Session on Advanced Technologies for Software Reliability and Safety (ATSRS), in conjunction with 2009 International Conference on Advanced Software Engineering & Its Applications (ASEA 2009), December 10-12, 2009, Jeju Island, Korea, we would focus on the more general topics on Advanced Reliability Technology for Computer-based Systems, including both hardware and software systems. As a special session of the unique and interesting event, AST 2010, we aim to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to present and discuss the state of the art and the new challenges in reliable/dependable computing research, as well as providing a unique opportunity for establishing collaborations among several research groups interested in this research field. SDR-GCC 2010: The International Workshop on Scalable Distributed Research for Grids, Clusters and Clouds

About the Workshop

Cloud Computing is backed up by the Industry sector whereas Grid Computing is backed up by the academic institutions. They are both coming from different point of views, but they might converge and remain as they are. However, research in this converging field should be identified independently. This workshop will aim to maintain a moderate difference in research analysis of these fields and their applications. Specifically, this workshop will focus on pioneering research in scalable distributed research environment with the aim to achieve a clear difference in range of applications of these fields.

5. Special Issue on Multimedia Security and Digital Forensics

GUEST EDITORS:

Dr. Fei Peng, Hunan University, Changsha, China.
Dr. Gaobo Yang, University of Surrey, Surrey, UK.

With the development of the Internet and multimedia processing techniques, the protection of multimedia content has become increasingly important.  The traditional cryptographic encryption is a powerful tool for confidentiality protection, but it is not specially for multimedia with large volume of data, which lead the researchers to seek for better protection methods. The technology that allows for digital multimedia to be manipulated and distorted is developing at break-neck speeds. And at the same time, our understanding of the technological, ethical, and legal implications is lagging behind. Therefore, development of mathematical and computational algorithms for tampering detection in digital media (in the absence of any type of digital watermark or signature) is becoming urgent. The objectives of this special issue are to bring out the remarkable current developments in multimedia security and digital forensics and the enhanced practices of researchers and practitioners to promote, advertise and share the knowledge related to information security.

36. Special issue on web services in the cloud computing

Special issue on web services in the cloud computing

Description
By offering computing as a utility at a high economy of scale, cloud computing has great potential to reshape the landscape of the IT industry. Following a service-oriented paradigm, cloud computing enables customers to build scalable software services hosted on large-scale data centers while allowing these services to be accessed through a variety of computing devices over the Internet. As cloud computing technologies have been maturing, enterprises are increasingly adopting this new computing paradigm to solve important business problems.
And yet cloud computing continues to face deep technical challenges. These challenges are multifaceted and span almost the entire spectrum of computer science. On the service-hosting side, extremely large-scale data centers must offer secure, highly available services while maintain energy and performance efficiency. This continues to spur innovation in hardware architecture and systems software design. On the service-delivering side, service discovery and delivery mechanisms must support thousands of globally distributed client devices with highly diverse hardware and software configurations. Although this concern is partially addressed by web services in the traditional service-oriented computing environments, cloud computing environments require that the design and architecture of existing web services be revisited.
In light of these technological trends, this special issue will focus on fundamental research problems in cloud computing technologies, including novel studies underlining the challenges and opportunities presented to web services in the cloud computing era.

49. Research and Application of Advanced Computing Technology in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing

Research and Application of Advanced Computing Technology in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing

Description
Computer-integrated manufacturing is the manufacturing approach of using computers to control the entire production process. Its research and application are growing in the last decade. Computer integrated manufacturing as a strategy helps to improve the performance of a manufacturing firm by integrating various financial areas of manufacturing, both in terms of material and information flow. This integration allows individual processes to exchange information with each other and initiate actions. Through the integration of computers, manufacturing can be faster and less error-prone, although the main advantage is the ability to create automated manufacturing processes. In a system functional area such as design, analysis, planning, purchasing, cost accounting, inventory control, and distribution are linked through the computer with factory floor functions such as materials handling and management, providing direct control and monitoring of all the operations. So, involves lots of advanced computing technology.

50. Swarm intelligence and applications

Swarm intelligence and applications

Description
Swarm intelligence is a computational intelligence technique to solve complex real-world problems. It involves the study of collective behaviour of individuals in a population who interact locally with one another and with their environment in a decentralized control system.

SI systems are typically made up of a population of simple agents or boids interacting locally with one another and with their environment. The inspiration often comes from nature, especially biological systems. The agents follow very simple rules, and although there is no centralized control structure dictating how individual agents should behave, local, and to a certain degree random, interactions between such agents lead to the emergence of "intelligent" global behavior, unknown to the individual agents. Natural examples of SI include ant colonies, bird flocking, animal herding, bacterial growth, and fish schooling.

An example of a particularly successful research direction in swarm intelligence is ant colony optimization, the main focus of which is on discrete optimization problems. Ant colony optimization has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult discrete optimization problems including the traveling salesman problem, the quadratic assignment problem, scheduling, vehicle routing, etc., as well as to routing in telecommunication networks. Another interesting approach is that of particle swarm optimization, that focuses on continuous optimization problems. Here too, a number of successful applications can be found in the recent literature. Swarm robotics is another relevant field. Here, the focus is on applying swarm intelligence techniques to the control of large groups of cooperating autonomous robots.

The aim of this special issue is to highlight the most significant recent developments on the topics of SI, to identify future research directions, and publicize SI algorithms to a wider audience.
